The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has taken a significant step forward in preparing for the ninth replenishment cycle of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-9) through a National Dialogue held from 18–20 March 2026, in Maseru. This workshop brought together government representatives, civil society organizations, GEF agencies, development partners and academia, the dialogue served as a strategic platform to align national priorities and shape Lesotho’s environmental programming for the next four years (2026 – 2030).
The gathering provided an opportunity for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions on funding allocations, thematic priorities, and innovative approaches to addressing pressing environmental challenges, including biodiversity loss, climate change, land degradation, and broader ecosystem sustainability. Participants emphasised the importance of collaboration across sectors, noting that effective environmental action requires strong partnerships. The dialogue further highlighted the need for inclusive approaches, where communities are not only beneficiaries but active implementers of projects, ensuring long-term ownership and sustainability.
A key outcome of the dialogue was the prioritization of Integrated Programmes (IP). There was broad agreement on the need to design interventions that simultaneously address multiple environmental benefits, maximizing impact while optimising limited resources. Deliberations on strategic direction and focal areas led to the identification of priority sectors aligned with national development goals and global environmental frameworks. There was a strong push toward results-driven programming, supported by innovative approaches such as nature-based solutions and ecosystem restoration. On accessing GEF resources, the engagement highlighted the need to strengthen national capacity for developing competitive project proposals and navigating GEF processes effectively. Improving institutional coordination and fostering partnerships with accredited agencies emerged as critical steps toward enhancing access to funding.
The National Dialogue laid a solid foundation for Lesotho’s engagement with GEF-9. It reaffirmed the country’s commitment to advancing sustainable, integrated, and inclusive environmental solutions. As Lesotho moves forward, the outcomes of this dialogue are expected to guide the development of impactful programmes that contribute meaningfully to both national priorities and global environmental goals.
