The Department of Environment

The Department of Environment formerly known as the National Environment Secretariat (NES) was established in April 1994 and is currently under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The Department of Environment is a lead agency for environmental management and promotes a socio-economically and environmentally sustainable development.

Providing education about the environment

Advising developers on projects that need Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

Monitoring ongoing projects

Offering permits for keeping and exporting wild animals

Inspections for pollution sources and recommendation of mitigation measure

Promoting awareness on issues concerning the environment

Providing environmental clearance for projects that require EIA

Establishment of the Environmental Reporting System

Facilitating safe collection and disposal of hazardous waste
