Launch of the National Strategy of Education for Sustainable Development

The Department of Environment of the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture and Lesotho National Commission for UNESCO launched the National Strategy of Education for Sustainable Development on 17 June, 2009 at the National Convention Centre.

2005 2014 is a decade designated by the UN General Assembly as The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UN DESD) through resolution 57 / 254. UNESCO was designated the lead agency for the promotion of the decade and was requested to develop an International Implementation Scheme. The scheme summarizes the goals and objectives of the UN DESD, and its relationship to other key education movements such as Education for All, Millennium Development Goals, and New Partnerships for African Development and its Environmental Action Plan. The overall goal of the decade is to integrate principles, values and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning; formal, informal and non-formal

Lesotho is one of the first countries in Southern Africa to heed the call of the United Nations to develop a national strategy to implement the goals and objectives of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UN DESD 2005 2014). It is therefore an honour to Lesotho to be launching this strategy.
